Dinagat Islands History

Dinagat Islands is the site of the greatest and historic Battle of Surigao Strait during World War II. Loreto, the northernmost Municipality of the province, is the entry point to the Philippines of the American and Filipino Liberation forces under General Douglas MacArthur before proceeding to Leyte to fulfill his promise to return and liberate the Philippine Islands from the Japanese Imperial Army.

In 1965, Ruben Edera Ecleo Sr. founded the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA) at sitio Puyange, now Poblacion San Jose. It is a non-sectarian organization bounded by a strong spirit of brotherhood. Not long after that, members from across the country emigrated from the island to be in constant association with its founder.

The province is known as one of the holiest sites in the archipelago in the pre-Christian native religion. It is where the God of the hurricane was persuaded to give up their attacks on the islands by Da, the God of Peace.

Today, Dinagat Islands styles itself as the “province of the mystical island of love.”
