Train to Busan – Korean Hit Movie 2016
Train to Busan (Hangul: 부산행; RR: Busanhaeng) is a 2016 South Korean zombie apocalypse thriller film directed by Yeon Sang-ho and starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi and Ma Dong-seok. The film had its premiere in the Midnight Screenings section at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival on 13 May. On 7 August, the film set a record as the first Korean film of 2016 to break the audience record with over 10 million theatergoers.
An animated prequel, Seoul Station, was released less than a month later. The film serves as a reunion for Gong Yoo and Jung Yu-mi who both starred in the 2011 film The Crucible.
A truck driver is stopped at a road block. The guard says there was some sort of leak and the road has been closed. The driver complains to the guard that his delivery is going to be late if he has to take another route. The guard gives in and lets him through. As the driver continues on his cell phone rings. As he reaches for his phone, he does not see a deer in the road and he runs over it. He stops and curses, then continues on. As he drives off, the dead deer is resurrected as a zombie deer.
Seok-Woo, a fund manager who was divorced with his wife earlier, decides to take his daughter Su-an to her mother in Busan as her birthday gift. They board the KTX (a Korean bullet train) at a station in Seoul which is also occupied by the tough working-class husband Sang-hwa and his pregnant wife Seong-kyeong, a high school baseball team, rich but selfish CEO Yon-suk, elderly sisters In-gil and Jon-gil, and a homeless man.
As the train departs, a spasming young woman boards the train with a bite wound on her leg. News broadcast reports about a violent outbreak around Korea. The woman succumbs from the bite and attacks a passing female train attendant who attempted to resuscitate her. They infect the baseball team and the other passengers, except Yong-guk, his girlfriend Jin-hee and two other students.
The train stops at Daejeon. While they disembark from the train, they come across the military. But all the soldiers turn around and are found to be zombies. The passengers rush back to the train. As they wait, zombies break through from a room above the train and start jumping on the train roof. Realizing the dire situation they are in, the conductor has the train depart the station and try to proceed to Busan, where news has been heard that they were successful in stopping the contagion.
Seok-Woo receives a call from his coworker about the outbreak. When the passengers began to panic and ran to the second train cars in fear of the infected horde, he realized Su-an, who looks for a bathroom, was not at her seat. Su-an is trapped in a bathroom with Seong-kyeong, Jin-Hee and others in a rear car with zombies. Seok-Woo races to the back train car with Sang-hwa and Yong-guk and manage to fetch her daughter and the others before being chased back by the oncoming horde of infected passengers but they manage to reach at the remaining passengers’ train car. But the remaining passengers and Yon-suk had locked the car door before them, fearing infection. Yong-guk tries to break open the door while Seok-Woo and Sang-hwa try to block the door to prevent zombie hoard from entering their cabin from the other side of the car. Yong-guk successfully breaks open the door and Seong-kyeong, Su-an, Jin-Hee pass into the safe cabin while Sang-hwa and Seok-woo hold back the zombies. Sang-hwa is bitten and tells Seok-Woo to flee as he begins to be transformed to a zombie, asking him to take care of Seong-kyeong. Seok-woo is able to escape to the next car and shut the door behind him.
Yon-suk and the other passengers decide to isolate the escapees to another car as they were all splattered with blood and they don’t know if they are now contagious. As they contemplate their fate while locked in another car, the zombies break into the passenger car when one of the sisters decides to open the door after seeing her older sister is bitten and the selfishness of the other survivors. During the melee, Yon-suk and an attendant hide in one of the restrooms. Seok-woo gets a call from one of his employees who said that the outbreak was caused by one of their projects.
Due to a train wreck, they are forced to stop at the East Daegu train station. As they try to find another train to board, they are attacked. Yon-Suk flees the restroom by sacrificing the attendant. Yon-suk then throws Jin-Hee to a zombie to save himself. Yong-guk is despondent and tries to comfort Jin-Hee but is himself is bitten by Jin-Hee when she becomes a zombie. Seok-woo, Su-an, Seong-kyeong and Yon-Suk successfully board an engine and get it running. Seok-Woo realizes Yon-suk has been bitten and starts to transform into a zombie and fights him off and he is bitten by Yon-suk when Yon-suk is thrown off the train.
Seok-woo tells Seong-kyeong and Su-an how to stop the engine at the end of the track as he sacrifices himself before he is transformed. Later, Seong-kyeong and Su-an enter a tunnel leading to Busan. Soldiers guarding the exit see the two of them in the dark tunnel. The soldiers call their commander saying they see the two and ask for orders. Since they cannot be clearly seen, the commander orders them to kill the two. As the soldiers prepare to fire, they hear Su-an singing a song she composed for her father. They realize that the two of them are not zombies and declare that two survivors have been found.
As of September 15, 2016, Train to Busan has grossed $99 million worldwide.
