The fruit crops in the Philippines have been extremely considered as top quality products, based on the world market demands for Philippine fruit products such as bananas, pineapples, coconuts, etc. But one of the fruit breeds that remains and favorably cherished around the world is the mangoes from Guimaras.

Guimaras Island is positioned in the Western Visayas region. It is located in the Panay Gulf, sandwiched by the much bigger islands of Panay and Negros. It is an agricultural province which produces and exports products from rice, varieties of vegetables, coconuts, livestock and even the fish industry. However, the famous for these exports, is of course, the Guimaras mangoes.

It acknowledged as the world’s sweetest fruit by the Guinness Book of World Records, the Guimaras mangoes is said to be the finest mango specie that is produced anywhere in the world and is reportedly served in royal dining halls of kings and queens and official residences of presidents and prime ministers.

According to the National Mango Research Institute, the Guimaras mango is a rare type of strain from the carabao mango-type varieties. Unlike the carabao mango trees, the Guimaras type mango trees can only grow up to a height of only 25 to 30 feet.

The local government of Guimaras, through its campaign, actively bans anyone from bringing other species of mangoes to the island for fear of contamination and alteration to their highly-prized mangoes.

The Manggahan Festival, the largest event in Guimaras held annually, celebrates and promotes the value and importance of the Guimaras mangoes to the island of Guimaras as well as the whole Philippine nation.
