Maria Cristina Falls is known as the “Mother of Industry” and “Fountainhead of Progress” because it is the main source of electric power enjoyed by the city’s industries and the entire Mindanao region. It is also called as the “twin falls” because of the rock that separates it at the brink of the waterfall.
This has attracted tourists from various parts of the globe considering also that it is 320 ft.tall, making it the third highest waterfall in the country. It is the famous landmark of Iligan City, also called the City of Majestic Waterfalls, because of the presence of more than 20 waterfalls in the city.
It is located 9.3 kilometers away southwest of the city proper at the boundaries of Barangay Maria Cristina, Ditucalan, and Buru-un. The waterfall is the second highest in the Philippines. The falls is located within the NPC Nature Park where a wide range of interesting sights and fun outdoor activities can also be enjoyed by visitors.
The jump-off points to Maria Cristina Falls, Timoga Springs and Tinago Falls are along the national highway. From the city center, ride a Buru-un jeepney (PHP 8-12). Entrance to NPC Nature’s Park, site of Maria Cristina Falls, is PHP 35 per head.
A shuttle service (PHP 50) takes visitors from the entrance to the Biological & Zoological Park and Maria Cristina Falls. Nevertheless, it was one big picturesque. The sight of Maria Cristina Falls just let me think how powerful and perfect our Creator is. With this falls, it can even produce electricity for whole Mindanao.
The sound of the water calmed me and did let me forget all my problems & heartaches in life at that time. The park also offers zipline (Php200) to those who would like to experience an adrenaline rush while watching the beauty of Maria Cristina Falls.
Certainly a must-visit to tourists visiting Iligan City, the nature park features a view deck that directly looks out to the falls. The view deck is not very close to the falls but it is the closest point you’ll ever be able to reach. Raging waters prevent treks close to the actual falls. Still, you can easily admire the beauty of the falls even at a distance.
