Happiness Tip

By admin On April 29, 2008 No Comments

Life is not all about the haves and have-nots. New research reveals a more nuanced approach to life: Individuals who want what they have tend to be happier than others.

The study results, detailed in the April issue of the journal Psychological Science, suggest one key to achieving greater happiness is to continue wanting the things you have. That is, keep those rosy first-time-buyer lenses in place.

The spanking-new iPhone or the latest digital all-in-one gizmo could seem like the best buy upon purchase. But over time, the greatest purchase ever can become so yesterday and, the researchers say, you will derive less happiness from that item.

“Simply having a bunch of things is not the key to happiness,” said Jeff Larsen, a psychologist at Texas Tech University. “Our data show that you also need to appreciate those things you have. It’s also important to keep your desire for things you don’t own

Secrets of a Centenarian

By admin On April 4, 2008 No Comments

101-year-old Adele Lerner lied about her age until she was in her 90′s. But she didn’t do so out of vanity. Rather, she didn’t want people to view her as incapable of doing the things she wanted to do. When she finally told her children, Terry and Karen, that she was actually three years older than they had thought, they persuaded her to “come out of the closet.”  Read more..

The worst computer viruses of all time

By admin On March 30, 2008 No Comments

If you haven’t experienced a computer virus yet, just wait — you probably will.

Fortunately, you missed the real heyday of computer viruses when anti-virus software wasn’t very widely used, and virus attacks caused millions of dollars in damages overnight. Today’s viruses can still be nightmarish, but for the average user, cleanup is considerably easier than it was just a few years ago, when the only solution in many cases was reformatting your hard drive and starting from scratch (and even that didn’t do the trick sometimes).

So join me on a trip down memory lane as we revisit some of the worst viruses of all time and count our blessings that our computers are still up and running despite it all. (Though, please note, “worst” is a matter of considerable debate in the security industry, as the number of infected machines and amount of financial

Filipino devotees have themselves nailed to the cross in the belief that it will atone their sins, or fulfill vows for an answered prayer. Manny Pacquiao beats Juan Manuel Marquez in a sensational split decision

By admin On March 16, 2008 No Comments

LAS VEGAS (AP)—At the merciful final bell, Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez both raised their arms in victory, just as they did after their first fight nearly four years ago.
Their cornermen boosted them into the air again, arms around their fighters’ blood-spattered trunks. Mexican and Filipino fans joined in another unified cheer for two of the world’s best boxers, whose rematch was worth every minute of the wait.

And by one point on one judge’s scorecard, Pacquiao was a champion again. Pacquiao won a split decision to claim Marquez’s WBC 130-pound title Saturday night in a sensational fight that left both men bleeding, battered and triumphant.
With outstanding action and clever tactics in nearly every round at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, the fight showed why both boxers are at the peak of their profession. Pacquiao (46-3-2) nearly had the fight won when he floored Marquez with a brutal

The truth about using hands-free devices behind the wheel

By admin On March 13, 2008 1 Comment

Many states (including California, New York, Washington, the District of Columbia, and Connecticut) have imposed laws requiring drivers to use hands-free devices to make phone calls. New Jersey even made violation of its law a first offense. But several studies over the years have found that talking on a hands-free device is not much safer than talking on a hand-held device.A study by the American Psychological Association of over 500 drivers found that talking on a cell phone cut activity in areas of the brain used for driving by half. Drivers focusing on a phone conversation had slower reaction times, were less likely to recall objects on the road, and had a hard time noticing traffic around them. Researchers also noted that hands-free devices in the car posed the same hazards as hand-held devices.

A different study by the University of Utah tested drivers’ use of hands-free cell phones
