Diving at Black Island Wreck Busuanga, Philippines

Black Island Wreck is one of the favoured wrecks in the Philippines visited by scuba divers. The Malajon Island, one of the islands in the Calamianes group of Islands, is also known as Black Island because of its black rocks.


Coron, Busuanga Island and Calamianes Islands (site of the Black Island) are known in the Philippine as the Calamianes group of Islands. They are the northern islands of Palawan. Busuanga Island, the main island of the Calamianes group of Islands, is about an hour and 20 minutes by plane from Manila, Philippines.

The most spectacular nature scenes of the Philippines are in Busuanga Island. Here, you will find underwater and land caves, huge limestone cliffs, forests, rivers, hot springs, and mangroves.

On September 24, 1944, Busuanga Island became a witness of the Second World War. The U.S. Navy conducted an aerial bombardment of Japanese support vessels and cargo in the waters of this island. A number of shipwrecks were kept secret in the waters of this island. Busuanga Island now has become a sanctuary for different species of marine life that make these ruins their home.

The wreck lies just off the Black Island Beach, right in front of a boat stranded on the shore. Malajon Island or Black Island is on the west side of Busuanga Island. To get there is require three to five hours boat ride. You can spend the night at small resorts in the area, while diving in the Black Island Wreck and other wrecks along the way.

The Black Island wreck is a small tank designed to transport fuels. These fuels are placed in insulated tanks to replenish the fuel supply of the land-based military depots. These oil tankers were from the Japanese Imperial Army.

The Black Island Wreck is a famous dive site for wreck diving beginners, due to the shallow depth. Depth of the wreck starts at 21. 32 meters is the deepest point with a visibility of 20 meters. The dive site is also perfect for underwater photographers and night divers.

The wreck has a lot of fish. You can find great scorpion fish and lionfish. You will be fascinated by the schools of batfish, trumpet fish, and sweepers fish that share their terrority. Emperor angelfish and six bands angelfish are also lived around. Sponges, hydroids and crinoids are found here.
