Dengue is a completely preventable condition, all you have to do is take a few steps to keep yourself and your family safe.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are known to bite humans during the day and at night when the lights are on. Their most common breeding grounds are man-made containers with stagnant water.
Tip #1: Get rid of water in areas where mosquitoes breed:
- Clean out empty glower pots and do not over-water potted plants.
- Turn over empty pails and buckets so that they do not collect excess water. If the vessel that contains water cannot be emptied, cover it well when not in use.
- If you use a cooler, empty out the water and clean the water tray regularly, even when not in use.
Tip #2: Make sure your window and door screens do not have any holes. Repair any holes to block mosquitoes.
Tip #3: Use mosquito repellent regularly and apply it well on all exposed areas.
Tip #4: Dress in protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes.
Tip #5: If some one in your home has contracted dengue, take extra precautions to prevent mosquitoes from biting the patient and others in the household.
Tip #6: Sleep under a mosquito net.
Tip #7: Always cover your trashcan when not in use.
