Bantayan Island is located in the western portion of the northern tip of Cebu Island. It is politically a part of the Province of Cebu, Philippines.

Bantayan island can be reached via bus from Cebu City (via the North Bus Terminal near SM City Shopping Mall) then via ferry boat from Hagnaya Wharf in Hagnaya Cebu, or from Sagay in Negros Occidental. No commercial flights or overnight ferries are currently operating from Cebu City. It is possible to charter a small private airplane from Mactan-Cebu International Airport, to Bantayan Airport on Bantayan Island.

The island is composed of three municipalities:

Bantayan, Cebu
Madridejos, Cebu
Santa Fe, Cebu

As of the 2000 census, the island had a total population of 120,101.

With its clear blue skies, sparkling blue waters and find white-sand beaches, Bantayan Island is the place to go for a unique summer treat. Place northwest off the tip of mainland Cebu, Bantayan Island hosts local and foreign tourists who stroll to the island, especially during Holy Week for a much-needed rest and relaxation. Thus, it is marked as the Lenten Capital of the Visayas. The island is also the egg basket in the region area, supplying or providing the demand for egg in Cebu, Leyte and Negros.

Bantayan is considered as the town proper in the island. It is known for its mouth-watering appetizing dried fish and squid that most tourists take as a food souvenir. Sta. Fe, on the other hand, is well-known for its line of beach resorts. As early as February, all resorts are already fully booked reserved for summer. The island is easily accessible from Cebu City. A bus rides from Cebu North Bus Terminal take the traveler to Hagnaya port, which is three hours away.

How to Get to Bantayan Island

You can take a bus ride to Hagnaya. You can do that from Cebu City or from Bogo City. Hagnaya is north west of Bogo City.

If you leave from Cebu City, you’ll want to head to the North Bus Terminal, ask your taxi driver to take you there. The bus will cost you around P100 from Cebu City. Once in Hagnaya you’ll take a ferry to Bantayan. Island Shipping provides air con in first class. There will also be a TV during the most trip. The cost at the time of this article is P165 for first class. Super Ferry also provides a ferry to Bantayan. Super Ferry does not have air con nor first class. The Super Ferry is about P150 as is a second class using Island Shipping. The trip across takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Once the ship is moving, the breeze will keep all but the most air con dependent person cool enough.

The ferries usually leave Hagnaya about every hour or so. That changes during the peak and off peak season, and it could likely be longer. So far, an hour is the longest I had to wait to get on a ship.

There is a small private airport on Bantayan Island. You can hire a plane that flew you from Cebu City to Bantayan Island. That’s the way to go if price is not an issue. I believe their fee is $200 per person with a minimum of two people. It’s a small private plane. The air service can be reached by calling 63-32-342-8340 or by email at sogbu@hanmail.net.
