Quake shattered Haiti awaits aid as thousands feared dead

Thousands are feared dead after Haiti’s deadliest earthquake. The Prime Minister of Haiti said that he feared an earthquake which devastated Port-au-Prince could have killed “well over 100,000″ people. According to the Red Cross, more than three million people have been affected and over six hundred thousand reportedly injured.

The quake measuring seven on the Richter scale destroyed the Presidential Palace. Most of the island’s infrastructure has been severely damaged. The island state is said to be suffering ‘a catastrophe of major proportions’.

Haiti hit by a huge earthquake

Hundreds are feared dead in Haiti after the strongest earthquake that hit the country in over two hundred years. The island, is considered the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, is said to be suffering ‘a catastrophe of major proportions.’ Tens of thousands of people are now homeless after 7.0 magnitude quake. The Presidential Palace and the UN headquarters are in ruins too. There’s been a united plea for international aid and hundreds or even thousands are estimated to have died in the tragedy.

Quake devastates Haiti, many casualties feared

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – A powerful earthquake struck Haiti’s capital on Tuesday with withering force, toppling everything from simple shacks to the ornate National Palace and the headquarters of U.N. peacekeepers. The dead and injured lay in the streets even as strong aftershocks rippled through the impoverished Caribbean country.

Associated Press journalists based in Port-au-Prince said the damage from the quake — the most powerful to hit Haiti in more than 200 years — is staggering even in a country accustomed to tragedy and disaster.

Women covered in dust crawled from the rubble wailing as others wandered through the streets holding hands. Thousands gathered in public squares late into the night, singing hymns. Many gravely injured people still sat in the streets early Wednesday, pleading for doctors. With almost no emergency services to speak of, the survivors had few other options.
