Panglao is the southernmost town of Bohol. It is one of the 2 towns on Panglao Island, the other being Dauis. It is of historical significance in that it was the place where the Spaniards went after an unfortunate experience in Cebu.

It is said that the Spanish explorers who came to this island in 1803 named it Panglao after the world ‘mapanglao’, meaning ‘lonesome place’. It is also one of the old towns of Bohol. It had a population of 6,543 in 1879.

THE new minimum fare for public utility jeepneys in Cebu starting today will be P6.50.However, not all jeepney drivers are expected to collect the new rate in an effort to compel government to heed their demand for a P1.50 increase, instead of the provisional P.50 fare hike.

Anticipating confusion from both the drivers and the riding public, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7 Director Romulo Bernardes will be holding a press conference today, “to guide everyone on how to go about this (implementation of provisional fare increase).”

In an interview over radio dyLA yesterday, Bernardes also appealed to both drivers and passengers to make sure they are prepared with loose change.

WARSAW, Poland – Irena Sendler — credited with saving some 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazi Holocaust by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto, some of them in baskets — died Monday, her family said. She was 98.

Sendler, among the first to be honored by Israel‘s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial as a Righteous Among Nations for her wartime heroism, died at a Warsaw hospital, daughter Janina Zgrzembska told The Associated Press.

President Lech Kaczynski expressed “great regret” over Sendler’s death, calling her “extremely brave” and “an exceptional person.” In recent years, Kaczynski had spearheaded a campaign to put Sendler’s name forward as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sendler was a 29-year-old social worker with the city’s welfare department when Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, launching World War II. Warsaw’s Jews were forced into a walled-off ghetto.
